On the offensive for stronger European Works Councils
On 1 May 2008, the ETUC launched a campaign for stronger European Works Councils (EWCs ). The ETUC has long been calling for revision of the EWC Directive, but recently refused to enter into negotiations with BusinessEurope in the framework of the social dialogue because we believed it was not feasible to reach agreement in time for the issue to be dealt with in the lifetime of the current Commission and Parliament.

On 16th December 2008 the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers agreed on strengthened information and consultation rights, thus ensuring that workers are better equipped to defend their jobs and fight against the negative effects of the crisis.
