The Stockholm Programme: Meeting in the European Parliament

24/03/2010

24 March 2010 at 13H00-15H00 in the European Parliament in Brussels.

The European Council last December adopted "The Stockholm Programme, an open and secure Europe serving and protecting citizens". The Commission is due to present an Action Plan, with a clear timetable and actions for its implementation, in the first six months of 2010.

For this reason, the S&D Group has taken the initiative to organise a meeting with the European Trade Unions Federations. The EMF attends the meeting in order to present its position on the Stockholm Programme.

Talking about citizens, we also refer to migrant workers. This new programme will have a direct impact on millions of citizens and therefore on migration and employment.

In the document adopted, the European Council encourages the EU institutions to hold an open, transparent and regular dialogue with representative associations and civil society.

This means dialogue with those who are involved in the implementation of the Stockholm Programme, in particular in the context of the important demographic challenges that the Union will face in future with an increased demand for labour.

The European Council recognises that the long-term social and economic consequences of migrant workers have to be taken into due account and that the interconnection between migration policies and other related policy areas, like employment, remain crucial.
