Sectoral policy steel covers the framework for a competitive European steel industry with a high degree of employment. On the basis of 50 years of cooperation with employers within the framework of the ECSC Treaty, the EMF covers issues such as employment development, competition, competitiveness, working conditions, salaries and working time. Strong cooperation with European and international working structures is necessary to cover steel workers’ interests, i.e. on trade issues.
EMF Stainless Steel Conference 8 December
The situation in the European stainless steel industry, especially regarding its workers, requires the special attention of the EMF and its affiliates. For this reason a conference is being organised in Brussels 8 December with European trade unions to jointly develop an accurate overview of the situation of the industry, hold an exchange of ideas and identify areas of action for trade unions active in this sector.

Trouble at a ArcelorMittal site in Brazil as local union not invited to meeting
While health and safety standards are high on site, the relations between management and the local CNM-CUT union at Turbarao, ArcelorMittal's site in Vitória, Brazil need improvement.
BRAZIL: The ArcelorMittal Joint Global Health and Safety Committee (JGHSC) met on March 28 and 29 at the Turbarao Steel Plant in Vitória. The plant produces 7.5 million tons of steel and has 4,870 direct employees. Safety standards within the plant were very high, but employee relations and, in particular, engagement with the local CNM-CUT union are areas that need improvement.

Acindar sets benchmark for the rest of Latin America
The ArcelorMittal Joint Global Health and Safety Committee (JGHSC) met on 1-3 March at the Acindar Steel Plant in Argentina. The purpose of the visit was to see how the local joint health and safety committee function and also to carry out a site visit.
The plant produces 90 per cent of Argentina’s long product consumption and has 2675 direct employees. There are two unions present; ASIMRA and UOM and between them the union density is 85 per cent of the workforce.

Towards a European steel council on jobs and skills? Identifying the actors
The European Metalworkers’ Federation (EMF) and the European Confederation of Iron and Steel Industries (EUROFER) have jointly submitted a project proposal to the Commission (Budget heading 04.03.03.01 - Industrial Relations and Social Dialogue) concerning the possible setting up of a European Sector Council on Jobs and Employment for the steel industry.
