Both unions – Metal and Agriculture – already had mergers in the past (1991, 2000). Due to changes in Austria’s industrial structure the unions decided that a merger would be the best way to ensure the rights and the standards of the Austrian workers in their sectors.
On May 9th 2006 a congress was held where the delegates voted for the merger.
With more than 230.000 members the Austrian Metal-, Textile- and Food Worker’s Trade Union is now the third largest union within the Austrian Trade Union Federation, who gathers twelve different unions.
