In 1891, the Deutsche Metallarbeiter-Verband (DMV) (German Metalworkers' Federation) was founded, and by 1914 it had become the largest single trade union in Germany. The DMV, alongside the Christian Metalworkers' Federation, established in 1899, and a liberal organization, was the largest organization that preceded the present-day IG Metall.

IG Metall today represents more than 2.4 million employees from the metal, metal manufacturing, textile and clothing, and wood and plastics industries, as well as other related sectors.

IG Metall is a member of the German Confederation of Trade Unions (Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund, DGB), as well as a number of international union umbrella organisations, including the EMF.
