Dear colleagues,

In June 2006 the social democratic party SMER - SD won the parliamentary elections in the Slovak republic. One of the promises which have been given from this party to the voters was to revise the Labour Code, which is one of the most liberal in the European Union. Right now we are in the middle of this revision. The new draft of this amendment has been developed within the cooperation of the government, employers and the employees’ representatives.

Trade union Kovo know very well the problems of its members and therefore welcomed this initiative of the Slovak Labour, Social Affairs and Family Ministry to revise the Labour Code. We even think that the amendment of the labour law should be wider as it is prepared by the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family of the Slovak Republic.

In the meantime started very intensive medial anti-campaign organised by the employers´ associations. In this campaign the employers stress the negative influence of this amendment on the employment and business in Slovakia. But these arguments are unwarranted assertions. We believe that the main target of the Labour Code is to protect the employees and not the employers and this amendment will
strengthen the rights and protections of the employees.

From this reason we would like to kindly ask you to support this initiative of the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family of the Slovak Republic, which is in harmony with the governmental statement of policy and prepared in close cooperation with our trade union and the confederation of trade unions in Slovak Republic by sending letter of support to the social democratic party SMER – SD, to
the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family of the Slovak Republic and a copy to
our trade union.
