Coordination of Collective Bargaining
The main aims and objectives of the EMF collective bargaining strategy are the improvement of working and living conditions of metalworkers, the coordination of national collective bargaining policies and the development, enhancement and promotion of an active European collective bargaining policy.
Increased competition at a national, European and global level has threatened the results and the structures of collective bargaining in Europe. Strong national trade unions and coordinated collective bargaining strategies are still the best and most viable answer to the corresponding danger of social competition, wage dumping, a negative downwards spiral of wages and working conditions.
In order to confront these challenges the EMF improves and enhances its coordinated collective bargaing policy and is continously strengthening national collective bargaining across Europe.
The EMF affiliates committed themselves, for instance, to the following minimum standards:
- EMF Resolution on Working Time and Undercutting Labour Costs (2004)
- Wage Coordination Rule (1998)
- Working Time Charter (1998)
- Charter on Vocational Training
- Social Charter
You can find a complete overview of the EMF policy guidelines and minimum standards on collective bargaining here.
The EMF coordination in these areas will ensure better employment, social welfare, working conditions and a fairer and more consistent distributioon of income.
