ICT

The explosive boom in the ICT sector is over. Company crashes and redundancies have not yet come to an end. For the metalworkers’ unions, the interface between e-economy and the high-tech metal industry has become one of the most important strategic challenges.

Given the present situation, sectoral policy for the ICT sector needs a specific mixture of a sectoral and horizontal approach. Employment and lifelong learning, information and consultation, regulation on labour conditions and mobility are key issues. Managing change in restructuring of the ICT sector is a key activity of the EMF and its affiliates.

IG Metall activities in the ICT sector

Based on the roots of the Deutsche Metallarbeiter-Verband (DMV) (German Metalworkers' Federation) founded in 1891, IG Metall today represents more than 2.4 million employees from the metal, metal manufacturing, textile and clothing, and wood and plastics industries, as well as other related sectors.

IG Metall is a member of the German Confederation of Trade Unions (Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund, DGB), as well as a number of international union umbrella organisations, including the EMF.

IG Metall represents both blue- and white-collar workers.

Good Electronics Network

Good Electronics is a non registered organization that connects trade unions and NGOs worldwide, which all have the ICT industry in common. The network tries to strengthen the social society and influence company policy and practice in the area of human rights (including the social agenda and social dialogue) and the environment.

The participants of the network (there is no formal membership structure) exchange information, facilitate lobby, research and campaigning as well as build capacities at grass root level.

The coordination of the network is hosted by SOMO in Amsterdam.
