EMF Trade Union Coordination Group on VW confirms European solidarity and willingness to find European solutions

Today in Brussels the EMF held the first meeting of its Trade Union Coordination Group on VW with representatives from Belgium, German, Spain, Poland, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and the United Kingdom. The participants were trade union officers, VW European Works Council (EWC) members and members of the German VW Supervisory Board.

The EMF calls for strong information, consultation and participation rights

At the occasion of the 1st EMF Company Policy Conference, held in Brussels on 22nd and 23rd November 2006, 200 shop stewards, trade union representatives and European Works Councils members discussed the need for early and good quality information and consultation for workers’ representatives in relation to the industrial and economical future of companies in the metal industry.

1st Company Policy Conference

1st Company Policy Conference of the EMF “Workers’ Involvement in Multinational Companies: a Challenge for the Trade Unions in the metalworking sector”

Brussels, 22nd and 23rd November 2006
Almost 200 participants from all over Europe will take part in the first Company Policy Conference of the EMF, in Brussels, on 22nd and 23rd November 2006. Participants are mainly members of European Works Councils (EWCs) of major multinational companies in the metalworking sector and/or trade union representatives.

European restructuring at Volkswagen

The leading German automobile producer Volkswagen is undergoing a European restructuring programme and has already announced job cuts in Germany. However, last Friday, after the meeting of the supervisor board, uncertainty arose as to the future of the “Forest” VW plant in Brussels. “It is unacceptable that the Volkswagen management is leaving the workers without clear and solid information about the future of the production at Forest” stated the General Secretary of the European Metalworkers’ Federation (EMF) Peter Scherrer.

Conclusions of the EMF China seminar

China and the EU “Research on the future of European metal industries -
steel, automotive and shipbuilding”

Over 100 participants from all over Europe took part in an EMF seminar on 6th and 7th November 2006 in Elewijt (Belgium) marking the close of the EMF China project. The purpose of the project was to arrive at a common assessment of China's economic future and its consequences for Europe based on the situation in three metal sectors: steel, shipbuilding and automotive.

European trade union co-ordination on EADS future development

The European Metalworkers’ Federation (EMF) EADS Co-ordination Group met today under EMF auspices to discuss the current situation and a European strategy to secure the future of EADS. The EMF convened its EADS Co-ordination Group following the recent warning by Airbus of possible “painful job losses”. Severe industrial and financial problems will be faced by the manufacturer and its parent company EADS as a result of repeated delays to the new A380 ‘superjumbo’. The meeting was attended by approximately 40 representatives from 16 EMF member organisations involved in EADS in Germany, Spain, France, the UK and the Netherlands and Belgium.
