European trade union opposition to the closure of the PSA plant at Ryton

On 27 April 2006 PSA employee representatives and trade unions with membership in PSA from the UK, France and Spain met in Brussels under the auspices of the European Metalworkers’ Federation (EMF) and in the presence of a representative of the International Metalworkers’ Federation (IMF).

Les employés de l'entreprise CNH, anciennement Orenstein & Koppel (O&K) luttent depuis le 21 Février avec une grève illimitée pour le maintien de leurs emplois.

La raison de ce conflit social est la décision du groupe FIAT, la maison mère, de fermer l'usine de Berlin fin juillet et de transférer la production des excavatrices et des niveleuses en Italie.

The EMF reacts to announcement of closure of the Ryton PSA site (UK)

The managing director of PSA, Jean-Martin Folz, has just announced the closure of its Ryton site in the UK. The PSA group of companies is due to cease all production activities at Ryton by mid-2007. This decision is catastrophic, not only for the 2,300 British workers concerned but also for all those in related employment in the supplier industries in the region.

End of Strike at AEG Electrolux Nuremberg

The workers at the white goods producer AEG Electrolux in Nuremberg have been on strike for almost six weeks to prevent the closure of the plant at the end of next year. This closure was announced in the framework of the restructuring process for the whole of the Electrolux group.
The strike has now been called off as an agreement was reached on the morning of 28th February after long and tough negotiations. A ballot of the trade union members will be held, but IG Metall believes that the agreement will be accepted by its membership.

CEEMET & EMF

On 31 January 2006, representatives of CEEMET, the Council of European Employers of the Metal, Engineering and Technology-based industries, and EMF, the European Metalworkers' Federation held a first meeting of its permanent Working Group in Brussels. The CEEMET-EMF Working Group, which is composed of high level representatives from9 European countries, agreed to discuss "competitiveness and employment" and "education and training" over the next 2 years.
