EMF Executive Committee expresses strong support for GME workers at Azambuja
The Executive Committee of the European Metalworkers’ Federation, in its session on 13th and 14th June, was confronted by GME’s threat to close its plant in Azambuja. It therefore issued the following statement:
The EMF Executive Committee
- Manifests its firm opposition to GME’s intention to practice a policy of restructuring in Europe through closure of plants and dismissal of workers
- Strongly supports a negotiated solution permitting the continued operation of plants in Europe
- Manifests full solidarity with the workers of Azambuja, the European Employees’ Forum and the trade unions involved in the struggle against the plant closure and in defence of their jobs.
Welcoming this statement from the Executive Committee, which represents 69 metalworkers’ trade unions affiliated to the EMF in 31 European countries, Peter Scherrer, EMF General Secretary, said that it constituted a powerful and strong signal to the employer of the EMF’s solidarity and determination.
