Sectoral Social Dialogue Committee for the Steel Industry
Sectoral Social Dialogue Committee for the Steel Industry to be launched Wednesday, 21 June 2006.
On the 21st of June 2006, the European Metalworkers’ Federation (EMF) and the European
Confederation of Iron and Steel Industries (Eurofer) will resume their long standing co-operation at EU level, in the setting of a European Social Dialogue Committee for Steel.
Following decades of constructive dialogue in the framework of the European Coal and Steel
Community Treaty, both European social partners together with their respective members want
to continue contributing jointly to the global competitiveness of the European steel industry
while fostering a high level of employment with high quality jobs.
In this context, they will:
• Monitor the structural evolutions of the steel industry in Europe and worldwide as well as
their potential quantitative and qualitative impact on employment.
• Support high quality jobs, by
o promoting the highest standards in terms of health and safety at work, while
o seeking the most appropriate approaches for training in a context of unprecedented
demographic changes and increased competition for highly skilled workers.
• Give directions and recommendations in order to contribute to positive policy developments
at European and national levels.
• Monitor the social, economic and employment consequences of EU policies on the steel
sector.
EMF and Eurofer are confident that the new Social Dialogue Committee for Steel will provide
ground for a fruitful co-operation and will lead to constructive and positive results for the
European Steel Industry and its employees.
