SKEI (Slovenia) elects new President
The Trade Union of Metal and Electro Industry of Slovenia (SKEI) elected a new President at its 5th congress.
At the 5th SKEI congress the President of the Republic of Slovenia Dr. Janez Drnovška addressed in his speech the importance of strong and united trade unions. Shortly thereafter the congress launched the election of a new leadership for the biggest industrial trade union in Slovenia.
The newly elected President Lydia Jerkič got 101 of the 123 votes while the previous President Drago Gajser got 19 votes. Lydia Jerkič has a long standing career in the metalworker’s trade union of Slovenia and is by profession a lawyer. She stated after her election that she is undertaking all efforts to work for a unified trade union movement in order to give the workers all the possible support, which they need in such difficult times as it is today.
Peter Scherrer, the General Secretary of the European Metalworkers’ Federation (EMF) addressed in his speech the need for strong and active trade union organisations in Europe since the effects of rapid industrial changes are often hitting the workers severely.

The EMF is the representative body defending the interests of workers in the European metal industry. The EMF has a mandate for the external representation and coordination of the metalworkers' unions and a mandate to engage in bargaining at European level.
