NSN European Day of Action 12 June
The EMF and its affiliates to launch a European Day of Action on 12th June for the safeguard of jobs at Nokia Siemens Networks
In the wake of the trade union coordination meeting, which was organized on 25th May 2007 after the European restructuring announced by the management of Nokia Siemens Networks to debate employment prospects in the company, European metalworkers’ unions have decided to organize a European Day of Action on 12th June 2007 to protest at the 9000 jobs that are about to be cut.

The EMF met a delegation composed of employees’ representatives from the Alcan and Alcoa Groups today 1st June 2007 to discuss what was at stake regarding the hostile bid by the Alcoa Group for its competitor Alcan.

European trade union representatives unanimously oppose Nokia Siemens Networks announced restructuring plan
Trade union representatives from Nokia Siemens Networks’ (NSN) operations in Europe met today under the auspices of the European Metalworkers’ Federation (EMF) to discuss the restructuring plan announced by NSN management.
Invited to talk with the employees’ representatives, the NSN management representatives present at the meeting, confirmed the scope of the restructuring plan.

EMF calls on Nokia Siemens Networks to involve employee representatives in restructuring plan at European level
The European Metalworkers’ Federation has reacted today to the announcement by Mr. Simon Beresford-Wylie, Nokia Siemens Networks CEO, of 2.900 job cuts in Germany and 1.700 in Finland.
Although a downsizing of the workforce had been forecast last year when the merger between Nokia and Siemens network activities was announced, the news of some 4.600 job losses in only two countries has come as a kick in the teeth to many NSN employees. National employee representatives have indeed complained that information received from the management was inaccurate and had no relevance to enable a proper discussion of the restructuring process.

MEPs support the struggle for trade union rights in Turkey
The European Metalworkers’ Federation (EMF) is holding a conference in Istanbul next Tuesday on the topic of “Social dialogue and Corporate Social Responsibility – trade union activities in Turkey”. This is in response to the many reported cases of violation of trade union rights and of hindrance of trade union activities in the metalworking sector but also in many other industrial sectors in Turkey.
Closing of negotiations to set up a EWC at Arcelor Mittal
On 18th April 2007 in Aviles (Spain) management and employee representatives of Arcelor Mittal, the world’s largest steel producer, finalised negotiations to set up a European Works Council (EWC).
