Trade union representatives express concerns at Nokia Siemens Networks secretive attitude

Trade union representatives from Finland, France, Germany, Spain, Austria and Belgium have met today for a coordination meeting organised by the European Metalworkers Federation. The meeting comes in the wake of recent announcement by Nokia Siemens Networks’ management of drastic downsizing that will follow the merger between the two companies’ network activities. A 10 to 15% reduction in employment is expected following the merger, which will translate in the loss of about 6000 to 9000 jobs Europe-wide.

EMF delegation meets Commissioner Verheugen to address challenges facing the European automotive industry

An EMF led delegation consisting of trade union representatives and works council members from the European automotive industry met today with the Commissioner for Enterprise and Industry, Günter Verheugen in order to address the employment challenge in the European automotive sector.

Meeting of the EMF trade union coordination group GME

Today the European Metalworkers Federation (EMF) invited trade unions and workers representatives from the GM Europe plants to Brussels. 2007 will in GM Europe be the year of the decision about the future of the Astra plants in Ellesmere Port (GB), Antwerp (B), Bochum (D), Gliwice (PL), and Trollhattan (S). The trade unionists and works council members develop a common and solid strategy for the central demands for keeping all GM locations in Europe in operation. A further important element is the exclusion of forced redundancies.

The EMF calls on the EU Commission to give proper consideration to employment in its approach to CO2 emissions for passenger cars

Taking part in the intense debate between Commissioners Stavros Dimas (Environment) and Günter Verheugen (Enterprise) over the possible adoption of legislation setting a cap on CO2 emissions from passengers cars, the EMF has asked the EU Commission to adopt ambitious targets whilst taking care not to destroy employment in the European automotive sector.

The European Metalworkers’ Federation (EMF) welcomes the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the European Union on 1st January 2007 as an important and historic step for European integration.
