EMF Congress
Lisbon 6th & 7th June 2007
For a Social Europe through Solidarity:
Employment, Social Justice and Democracy
The watchword of the 3rd EMF Congress, which is taking place in Lisbon on 6th & 7th June 2007, is “Solidarity”. The solidarity put in place by a strong European trade union federation capable of upholding its members’ interests by defending employment, social justice and democracy and contributing to the construction of Social Europe.
This Congress will bring together some 500 delegates, guests and observers not only from trade union circles but also from the European institutions, business and academic circles. The trade union delegates will evaluate and debate the EMF Report on Activities, changes to the EMF Statutes, a Political Resolution and Motions and an ambitious Work Programme that will guide our work for the next four years.
Elections will also take place in respect of the EMF President, General Secretary and Deputy General Secretary. The current General Secretary - Peter Scherrer from IG Metall (D) - and Deputy General Secretary - Bart Samyn from ABVV Metaal (B) – will be standing for re-election. The current President, Tony Janssen from CCMB (B), is retiring and the candidate for this post is Renzo Ambrosetti from Unia (CH). (See EMF website for candidates’ CVs.)
Prominent speakers at Congress will include the Portuguese Minister of Labour, the Presidents of our Portuguese affiliates, Fequimetal and SIMA, the General Secretary of the International Metalworkers’ Federation, the Deputy General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation and the Secretary-General of CEEMET, the Council of European Employers of the Metal Engineering and Technology-based industries. Their presence underlines our shared values and visions regarding Europe and the importance of cooperation and solidarity when dealing with the challenges facing the European metalworking industry of today and tomorrow.
A Press Conference will be held at 12.30 p.m. on Wednesday 6th June at the Congress venue (see invitation to the press).
