Strikes are currently taking place at all the German Airbus production sites. In Laupheim this morning, over 2,000 people formed a human chain and paraded in front of the factory gates carrying red wooden hearts. In addition, some 20,000 demonstrators took part in the main rally in Hamburg, at which IG Metall’s President, Jürgen Peters, highlighted the demands regarding the EADS Power 8 programme.
Strikes also took place at all the Airbus production sites in France. Some 7,000 people took part in Toulouse and a further 4,000 in Saint Nazaire and Méaulte. In Paris a symbolic demonstration took place in front of the e EADS headquarters on Boulevard de Montmorency in which 250 people took part. The demonstrators have been joined by a Belgian delegation representing workers in the supplier companies. In his speech at the EADS headquarters, the EMF’s General Secretary, Peter Scherrer, emphasised the European solidarity among the Airbus workers.
In Spain (Puerto Real) there was a temporary work stoppage and a demonstration in front of the factory gates.
The UK unions also called for a protest demonstration in Chester at noon today.
“Airbus is a European project which needs European solutions. Airbus is a European success that Europeans should continue to be proud of. Today, we are successfully undertaking a European Action Day to demonstrate our unity and European solidarity with regard to safeguarding the future of Airbus and European jobs,” stated Peter Scherrer in Paris.
