Greek Unions call General strike
The EMF Executive Committee, meeting in Luxembourg on 10th & 11th December, expressed its full support and solidarity with the Greek trade unions' general strike taking place on 12th December.
The 24-hour general strike has been called by the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) in protest at planned pension and labour reforms. The situation has become critical given the current lack of social dialogue, with the government unwilling to discuss its proposed legislation in detail. The unions fear however that these plans will include an extension of the retirement age and a reduction in pensions, as well as huge changes in the public sector which will also lead to job losses.
The Greek trade unions expect a massive turnout tomorrow as support for the strike grows. The members of the EMF's Greek affiliate, POEM, will be out in force.
The EMF calls on all its affiliates to demonstrate their solidarity with the Greek trade union movement.
