Sympathy with Italian workers following fatal accident at Turin Steel Mill

A huge fire occurred in the thermal treatment processing section of ThyssenKrupp's steel mill in Turin in the early hours of 6th December. One worker was killed outright, three workers have since died from their injuries and a further three are still in hospital with extremely severe burns.

In July, ThyssenKrupp announced that it would close the mill, but 200 employees still work there. An investigation is being carried out into the cause of the fire.

The Italian trade unions, FIOM-CGIL, FIM-CISL and UILM, have called for a 2-hour nation-wide strike in relation to health and safety at work.

An 8-hour strike took place yesterday, both in Turin and Terni (where ThyssenKrupp intends to concentrate its operations).

The EMF 106th Executive Committee, which is currently meeting in Luxembourg, expressed its deepest sympathy to the families and friends of the workers who died or were injured in the accident.
